Golf ball is a ball specifically designed to play golf. The golf was first designed with wood in the early 1700’s and later on the balls were made with different types of materials such as leather, feathers etc.
The golfers used to play with wooden balls until the featherie ball was invented. A featherie is a hand-sewn cow’s leather bag stuffed with goose feathers and layered with paint.
In the early 1800’s, the balls made of leather and tightly covered with feathers, became the first choice of various international golfers. Almost immediately after the first shipment of featherie balls, a new much more durable solid gutta-percha rubber ball also known as “guttie� was fabricated.
Along with technical developments, a new high-performance combination of polymer and chemicals was designed to make the high quality balls.
According to rules a golf ball must not weigh more than 45.93 grams, and the diameter must not be less than 42.67 mm, and its shape must designed in a symmetric sphere. Like other golf equipments, the golf balls makers have to obtain an approval from the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and the United States Golf Association, and the companies without an approval are not allowed to supply the balls in any of the international tournament.
Nowadays the golf balls are designed in two new ways, the first one is the two piece ball, where the inner part is made of a solid core and the outer part is covered with high quality polymers and chemicals. And another one is the three-piece ball, made of a solid core, elastic windings and covered with a combination of high quality polymers and chemicals.
